WESLEY, John. A Collection of hymns, for the use of the people called Methodists. London: Printed at the Conference-Office, by Thomas Cordeaux, 1815.
(70 x 40 mm) pp. 536. Signatures: A-Y12, Z4. Collated and Complete. Velvet hand crafted binding with stitching repair along front and crude stitching internally, likely by original owner. Metal clasp. Some crumpling to bottom edges of pages around 217. 229 torn in margin. Staining towards beginning. Evidently piece in historic use. Overall GOOD.
A woman named Jane, likely Jane Griffiths, owned this well-read miniature book of Methodist hymns in 1823. Her name, the date of June 15th, 1823, and the location of Gibraltar is written on the first fly leaf. It’s unclear whether this is Gibraltar the British-owned territory, or perhaps a Gibraltar Row (like in Liverpool).
The tiny book has been hand stitched into a rustic cover of a scrap of red velvet, which bears the evidence of contemporary repair stitches along the bottom right corner. The handmade cover is a lovely tribute to the books’ daily importance in Jane’s life (for it was likely Jane who made the cover herself).
