Jordan sets the scene: the European history of Pine Island, located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, begins in 1513, when Ponce de Leon careened his ship into the island and instigated conflict with the local Caloosa people. Despite the presence of peoples thousands of years before Ponce de Leon, and hundreds of years afterwards, this island, larges of the Gulf Coast islands, has been overlooked for the more glamorous nearby Santibel and Captiva Islands. Elaine Blohm Jordan’s work begins at the geological beginning (Pine Island is a young 45 million years old) and records the known history of the island into the 20th century.
Jordan’s self-published work is an important piece of Floridiana which steps outside of the Disney-sphere into authentic, Old Florida.
